Mentoring Details

There are three main phases to the creative writing mentoring we offer.editing_1

Overview

  • First phase: We help you do developmental and strategic work.

At the end of the first phase, you will have everything you need to write your book.

  • Second phase: We check in with you regularly to offer guidance and to keep you on track.

At the end of the second phase, you will have completed the draft of your book.

  • Third phase: We help you edit, revise, and prepare for publication.

At the end of the third phase, you will be ready for publication.

Phase 1: Creative Consulting

(usual duration 1-2 weeks, but we’re flexible.)

We are good at helping writers figure out the direction that their draft wants to go.

For this first stage, we are the best creative friends you could imagine. We will work hard exploring ideas with you. We’ll help you find the sweet spot based on what you’re good at, what you love, and what your reader wants.

To begin this step, you send us an email with all of your ideas as they stand. This includes a description of your project, your vision, and some of the material you have; your drafts, notes and outlines. What do you hope to accomplish? What do you want this project to be?

After giving all of this our careful thought and meditation, we will call you to discuss ideas, plan and brainstorm. Understanding where you are, together we will discover the specifics of where you want to go with your writing project.

We are your positive-minded, experienced, hardworking helpers, here to open up new possibilities and help chart the territory you will explore in your writing.

We will break things down into actionable steps. What sort of progress will you need to make week by week? What strategies and schedules will work best for you? Our focus is on helping the project be authentic to your dreams and ambitions.

Maybe you already have a lot of good written material on your hands but aren’t quite sure how to resolve it. We’ll help.me again_2

After this phase, you will have everything you need to knock out a good solid first draft of your project.

Which brings us to…

Phase 2: Coaching

(Usually this is about 3 months to 1 year, but it could be longer, depending on your project.)

Based on our strategy and discoveries from the first phase, we’ll develop a schedule together, a plan of implementation. It might take you three months and it might take a year or more to write your book. It all depends on the length of the project and your productivity goals.

During the coaching relationship, we’ll keep you accountable, checking in with ideas and encouragement at pre-arranged intervals via phone and email. Send us an email whenever you are ready to share your progress and we’ll schedule a phone call roughly every two weeks.

We will help you establish a productive daily writing ritual if you do not have one already. This is an important part of finishing the book and is one of the loveliest things creative practice has to offer: the daily joy of diving into the work which is yours to do.

As your coaches, we will be here to support you holistically, to give practical and creative suggestions, to listen to your progress and to provide reviews. We will keep you accountable with our optimism and enthusiasm and willingness to discuss ideas.

It is a real gift to have a couple of writers to share your progress with as often as you want. We’ll be ready with sensitive and helpful feedback.

After this phase, you will be feeling good with a strong and solid first draft of your manuscript completed, ready for revision and revisiting.

Phase 3: Developmental Editing

(Usually 2 weeks to 1 month or more)

Now that you have proudly finished the draft, you get to sit back and luxuriate in the pleasure of a job well done.

You will deliver to us your manuscript in full and we will give it a thorough read. We’ll return it with editing suggestions. Depending on your needs, we may work with you through one or two edits. In the case of multiple edits, the first edit is primarily focused on broad schemes: should things be moved around? Is the spirit of the work being served? Are all the characters and plot points working to their fullest advantage? Are your objectives being fulfilled?

You will then work through or otherwise respond to our edits and suggestions. An email and a phone call from the two of us follow each part of this step.

The second time you send the manuscript, we edit with a keen eye for detail and syntax, diction, rhythm, your voice and style.

Both of us read your manuscript, so you are getting two perspectives and two in-depth examinations of your work.

Depending on your project, you will either need to revise lightly or thoroughly. It all depends on what the project wants to be. We’ll stick with you as coaches during your revising and rewriting timeframe.

After that, you’ll have a finished manuscript, ready for polishing. You’ll still want a copy editor. We will give you resources to help you find the right copy editor for your project.

Depending on the project, we can provide accountability and assistance with regard to publication, with specific guidance on platform, book proposals, and strategies for marketing.

How to get started

Send us two pages of your material along with a brief description of your project and we will respond with our ideas and suggestions. We are good at this stuff and we love to do it.
